The preschool's design stands out due to its unique use of materials and design elements. The warmth and moisture of wood, combined with the clarity of white, injects comfort into the space. This allows for a blank canvas that gradually fills with color as the children interact with the space. The design team used natural solid wood leather and craftsman's arc technology to realize this vision. They also designed a special metal arc mold to shape the stone and used fiber cement board to create a light, arched wall partition design.
The design team faced challenges due to the needs of children's height, activity habits, and a safe teaching environment. The design required subtle observation and thinking. The team aimed to integrate the interior with nature and carefully considered light and penetration due to the restrictions of moving off the external building's wall. Despite these challenges, the team successfully created a space that transforms the over-standardized early education environment in Taiwan into a comfort and outdoor living nature.
The Butchart Gardens Preschool design started in May 2019 and was completed in June 2020. The project is located at No. 38, Lequn Rd., Banqiao Dist., New Taipei City 220, Taiwan (R.O.C.). The design team included CEO YU-ZU CHUANG, Designer SHIH-YAO HUANG, and Art Director CHIA-CHI KUO.
The design's unique features and innovative approach have not gone unnoticed. The Butchart Gardens Preschool was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, the Butchart Gardens Preschool by Creep Design is a testament to the power of innovative design in creating nurturing and inspiring environments for early education. The blend of Japanese and Italian design aesthetics, combined with a thoughtful approach to the needs of children, has resulted in a space that is not only beautiful but also functional and conducive to learning.
